BIOGRAPHY

It all started experimenting with the first techno in the late 80:ies with quarky synthesisers and funky drum machines. And at the same time improvising as a drummer in a jazz combo with some really talented friends. This made the foundation of what finally in 2002 was to become the Stockholm Cyclo project.

Today Alexander Ståhle works as a researcher on urban open spaces at the School of Architecture in Stockholm. He is a trained landscape architect, and has formerly worked with planning and arranging parks and open spaces in the city centre of Stockholm. At nighttime the focus is elsewhere. Then it’s all about futuristic jazz and dark electronic beats.

The first 12’ release “Electronic Ghetto Twist/Treeshaker” on DJ Mad Mats’ label Raw Fusion Recordings won nu-jazz heads all over. Played and listed 2002 by Michael Reinboth (Compost), Les Gammas, Reinhard Wimmer (Bogaloo), Jason Palma (Higher ground), Mitsuru Ogawa (DMR Rec) and also appearing on Michael Ruttens (Soulpatrol/Compost) Warrior Jazz Set. Finally “Electronic Ghetto Twist” was licensed to the compilation “Scando Nova – future sounds from the scandinavian underground” compiled by Björn Torske (Röyksopp) and DJ Zak Frost. Soul Seduction writes: "Stockholm Cyclo's debut release delivers two stunning cuts that will impress any purveyor of machine made Funk. Dark jazzy electronics that will make a strong impression on Nu Jazz, Electro, detroit and West London fans!"

The 12´ on IRMA Records "Music is all this" (Head2Toe) with a broken remix by Kabuki was released in July 2003 and immediately listed by dj:s like Patrick Forge, Gerd, Pathless, Joel Harrison (Soul Science) and Eddy & Gus. The press reaction on the Electro Boogie Mix: "dark morphing jazz techno with off kilter rythms and beautiful melodies..." Breakin Point, "warm chords with masses of delay and layers of breakbeat electronica..." Body & Soul, "Squashy electronica that deserves a check." M7/M8, "an electronic shuffler for a dance time lift..." DJ

Stockholm Cyclo contributes in the Raw Fusion compilation "Inside Scandinavia" with a nu-disco tune "Late night junction". Reviewed in the biggest daily newspaper in Sweden Dagens Nyheter (040121 / DN Kultur) as "Stockholm Cyclo makes excellent electronic six-minute-disco that sounds like its been recorded on a really successful party." The event and club magazine Nöjesguiden says "Among the unreleased tracks I am most impressed by Stockholm Cyclo's - Late night junction - which is a percussion-acid bomb in the best Fatback Band style". Phil Collins (Inthemix) says "Stockholm Cyclo ‘peak’ the session with the carnival atmosphere of “Late Night Junction” with a splattering of techier cosmic synth straddling accompanied by that Raw Fusion special touch." Late night junction was listed in Straight No Chaser (Japan) by DJ Mitsuru Ogawa. In the compilation Jazzflora from DNM Stockholm Cyclo contributes with the tune "Noisuf (raw jazz take)", that was reviewed (040123) in one of the biggest daily newspapers in Sweden Svenska Dagbladet as "something between Jeff Mills and Modern Jazz Quartett. In other words, excellent."

In 2003 Stockholm Cyclo started to make remixes for other artist in the nu-jazz scene. The broken house remix of "Generations" by Tweak presents Sharrin Harris (Head2Toe) was played in sept 2003 by Gerd and Simon Harris and on nu-jazz radio such as Nujazzsoul and Dancetraxx. "Stockholm cyclo mix is the one" Alan Sidewinder Fenetik "love the Stockholm cyclo mix. 9/10" Zak Frost Ministry of Sound Radio ”a bit of a corker. 7/8" M8 ”killer combination. 4/5" IDJ Magazine "Stockholm Cyclo shows his violent side with an excellent angry mix of "Generations", as beats punch hard, synths kick and keys blind." Jon Freer, Littleplanet.net. Stockholm Cyclo broken latinhouse remix of "Aphotic Maredeur" by Soul Quality Quartett (Irma Casa Di Primordine) was in dec 2003 released in Japan. Stockholm Cyclo in jan 2004 released a remix for the new jazz trio Music Music Music for their first album "One, Two, Free!" (Hoob Records). More Stockholm Cyclo remixes to be released are "Naima" with Soul Bossa Trio (Irma on Canvas) and "Why are we here" by Zeb (Irma on Canvas).

The album "Beginning People" on Quadra (Irma records) released in oct 2003 in Japan, and in feb 2004 in Europe and North America, is a mixture of electronic nu-jazz, broken beats and soulful detroit techno. Alexander Ståhle has here engaged some of his old friends that now work as professional jazz musicians, the soulful pianist and voice Gustaf Karlöf, flute and sax player Nils Berg and souljazz singer M Elino (Malin Dahlström). This has made the sublime clash between Detroit-inspired rhythms and jazzy scandinavian theories, a hard electronic nu-jazz style with a touch of both West London and Berlin. Album was recommended by Johanna Olofson (J-Ol) in the daily newspaper Expressen (040312). Album review in the magazine BON: "The music is made with the same precision as an architectural drawing. And you can dance to it."

Recent releases are on the upcoming Stockholm label Soundscape Records, run by Ture Sjöberg alias Beatfanatic. The boogietech EP with the disco house track Sticky got swedish radio time and nice Dj reactions. Coming up is a broken beat EP and an album on the same label.

You will find that the sound of Stockholm Cyclo really is all about electronic dancing, which has already been appreciated on severeal gigs in Stockholm and a tour to Japan and Russia.
